1. The Beatles – Within You Without You

This George Harrison penned track was number 8 on the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Despite being a somewhat difficult and ‘odd’ track there are still a number of cover versions out there, including the following one by Sonic Youth.

2. Sonic Youth – Within You Without You

Sonic Youth covered this George Harrison penned Beatles track on an album called Sgt Pepper Knew My Father. In September 1994 Sonic Youth hit the UK charts at a peak of number 45 with a song called Superstar. The song had been recorded by many artists previously but the most famous one had to be the one by the Carpenters.

3. Carpenters – Superstar

The only two acts to have taken this song in to the UK charts was, secondly, Sonic Youth in 1994 and, firstly, the Carpenters who took their version to a peak of number 18 in the UK charts in 1971. In 1974 the Carpenters hit a peak of number 12 in the UK charts with the song Jambalaya (On The Bayou) which was originally by Hank Williams.

4. Hank Williams – Jambalaya (On The Bayou)

Somewhat dissapointingly Hank Williams never had a UK chart hit, although this song did later chart as a cover version by the Carpenters in 1974. In 1949 Hank Williams had a US Country number one hit with a song called Lovesick Blues, which later became a UK hit for Frank Ifield.

5. Frank Ifield – Lovesick Blues

Hank Williams had scored a number one hit with this song in the US Country charts as far back as 1949. Fast forward to 1962 and across the pond in the UK and Frank Ifield was sitting at the number one spot with his version. It was released as the follow up to his number one hit I Remember You, which had spent 7 weeks at number one. This one spent a total of 5 weeks at number one.
