In China the kiwifruit is known as Chinese gooseberry and originally was called the same thing in the U.S. Growers in New Zealand decided that the fruit deserved a more exotic name and decided to name the fruit after their national bird, the kiwi.

One kiwi packs more vitamin c than an orange of an equal size. It is also packed with 80 other known nutrients and only about 46 calories per fruit. For a closer look at these, click here.

In her article Five Fruits That Will Energize Your Body and Spirit BC Doan listed a host of reasons to eat kiwi. Be sure to read her article to find them out and to find out what four fruits that can help to energize your body.

The vitamins we are familiar with; the ones found in a multi are just the beginning. Some of the foods we know; that do not seem to be loaded with any particular vitamins are actually rich with phytonutrients. Turnips are one. Turnips are actually loaded with cancer fighting phytonutrients but do not boast large amount of any vitamins as we commonly know them.

But the kiwi boasts a high vitamin and phytonutrient content. They contain phytonutrients which aid in protecting DNA in the body cells from oxygen related damage.

What else do phytonutrients do?

· Fight off deficiency type diseases such as anemia, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke

· Help to continue the growth cycle of the garden

· Neutralize free radicals

· Eliminate toxic waste

· Help balance the body’s hormones

The vitamin C in kiwi has been shown to:

· Reduce the severity of arthritis; rheumatoid and osteoarthritis

· Aid in the treatment of asthma

· Helps to prevent colon cancer, high cholesterol and heart disease

· Encourage a healthy immune system

· Aid in preventing ear infections

· Reduce the risk of death from heart disease, stroke and cancer

The fiber in kiwi is helpful:

· In lowering high cholesterol

· Removing toxins from the colon to aid in cancer prevention

· Maintain sugar levels of diabetic patients

· Maintain proper weight

Kiwis also help in reducing blood clots and unlike aspirin which does the same thing kiwis do not cause the side effects of internal bleeding and inflammation.

They retain more of their vitamin c if eaten within the first 6 days of purchase. Losses amount to 12% after that but no carotenoids were lost.

If adding kiwi to a salad add it last as they are juicy and may cause the salad to become soggy. Eating a balanced diet containing plenty of fruits and vegetables help prolong and promote a healthy life.
