Your Sleep Can Get Better

Be sure that your room is aerated well, as fresh air is conducive to sleep, and, when possible, leave your window open at night (although in a basement apartment in a crime-ridden area this, rather obviously, not viable). A temperature of about 24°C is the ideal for sleeping, so do not keep heating on throughout the night or rest under duvets or blankets that are overly thick. Assure that your mattress and pillows are correct for you. These powerfully affect how you sleep.

If your mind is rushing after a nerve-racking day or you are deep in thought or worried, getting to sleep would be even tougher. Turn on the light and create a list. Either a to-do list so that you do not have to concern about remembering things, or simply list down whatever is annoying you – bringing whatever concerns you have onto paper in print does seem to get rid of them from your mind.

Avoid changing your bedroom into an office. It’s all right to read something light during the night to help you go to sleep, but spending time in bed doing something too mentally stimulating is likely to hold you awake.

Get up and do something for 20 minutes if you have woken up and cannot get back to sleep. Searching through cookbooks is a good way to spend the early hours of the morning. They are convenient on the eye and profoundly relaxing.

Move into the habit of getting an aromatherapy bath at night if you think you’re going to find it hard to get to sleep. The best of these therapy work wonders.

Avoid screens in the bedroom like televisions, computers and other similar electrical equipment. They are best maintained in another area if possible.

Take an herbal sleeping pill if all else fails. Valerian is astonishingly potent, while kava kava is a gentler alternate (avoid both if you’re pregnant). Great bedtime herbal teas are camomile, lime blossom and valerian.

Install soft, gentle lights, avoid strong overhead lights and get glowing bedside lamps and uplighters.

Get up at the start of dawn if you are still wide awake. It is perfectly the best time for having all your chores done without distractions.
